About Pretoria Sailing Club (453 total words in this text) (81 Reads) ![]() Pretoria Sailing Club was founded in 1959 on the Pienaar's river dam and then moved to Bon Accord dam some time after that. In the mid 1960's it relocated to its present home at Rietvlei and adopted its preesent name (before that being known as the Pretoria Postals Sailing Club) on the shores of Rietvlei dam. Since then it has grown to become one of the largest dinghy sailing clubs in Southern Africa. Located within the grounds of the beautiful Rietvlei nature reserve, it is hard to believe you are within 15 minutes of the centre of Pretoria. If you enjoy competitive sailing, the club has a full season of racing for all ages every Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday, through the summer. A bridge and rescue service is provided whenever racing is taking place. Various levels of racing skills are catered for with Saturday series races being very relaxed and the monthly club championships for the more serious competitor. The club has produced a number of sailors who have competed Nationally and Internationally with impressive results. Unfortunately only mono-hull dinghies are allowed. Should you prefer cruising, you may enjoy the environment that Pretoria Sailing Club has to offer. Situated in the nature reserve you might see the odd rhino drinking at the water's edge and plenty of bird-life that inhabits the reeds that surround the dam. Once a month there is a non racing day, and through the December holidays no racing takes place. This allows the cruiser to enjoy the entire dam in the best part of the season. Training courses from beginner level through advanced and for junior and senior sailors are presented. The club does have a fleet of Gypsies, Lasers, O9-ers and Optimists for rent to members at a very reasonable price. If you would rather just sit and relax while others sail. You could enjoy the club facilities which include a lounge with TV and DSTV decoder, a galley that provides light meals on Saturdays and Sundays, the spacious lawns and shady trees. Full ablutions with hot water are available to all members. A children's play area is provided for those children that are a bit too young to sail. Should the weather get miserable, a junior room with a pool table can be used by the youngsters. The grounds are never closed to members who can relax at the dam all year round. Social events are hosted at regular intervals where anything can happen. Virtually every Saturday evening you can join in the club bring and braai and watch the sun set while the jackals call. For those who own their own boat and participate actively in the club's program, there are parking areas for boats available at the dam. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
